Fly fishing: active yet relaxing in nature!

Introduction

According to a Gallup poll, 40% of people are either stressed or worried. According to multiple studies, people that are more connected to nature are normally calmer, and more mindful. This is one of the big reasons why many people go fishing; to find more peace in their mind. However, to most people traditional fishing is a bit boring as you are sitting, waiting for the fish to catch your bait. On the other hand, fly fishing is a more active style of fishing, as it puts you right in the middle of it all, and challenges you against the fish.

What is ‘fly fishing’?

Fly fishing is a technique for catching fish in streams, where you place your bait on the top of the water. This will make it seem as if a bug or invertebrate has landed on the top of the water or slightly below the water's surface. This will cause the fish to eat the bait. With fly fishing, you will typically stand in the middle of a stream, casting over and over, trying to find where the fish are hiding. However, this does come with a challenge, as you are trying to imitate how a fly would land on the water. This means that you need to place the bait at the exact right stop, in the exact right way so the fish come up and take it. If you land the bait on the water too hard, it will scare all the fish away.

Suitable for everyone!

Come along and enjoy, even if you don't have any experience yet!

Benefits of fly fishing

The reason fly fishing is becoming so popular is because of the many benefits that it gives you. Different to traditional fishing where you sit for a couple of hours, fly fishing helps provide a low-impact, full-body workout, where you are able to burn 500 to 1,500 calories during this activity while having fun.

According to Cigna's 2020 Loneliness Index, three in five adults report that they are feeling lonely. Fly fishing can help add meaningful social connections with like-minded individuals, or improve the bonding with your friends. If adding/improving your social connections is not your intention, psychologists suggest that fly fishing is a good way of giving yourself some “me time.” This can help you gain a new perspective on day-to-day challenges, enabling you to be able to cope with life’s demands better.

In addition, fly fishing can give you a boost in brain power. As it takes practice and patience to cast into the precise places where fish are likely to be hiding, and it uses brain power to be able to perfect new techniques or pick up new fly fishing tips. The focused attention and rapid reaction time involved in fly fishing will likely strengthen your mind.

Finally, while fly fishing, you will be in a beautiful environment, able to enjoy a wonderful view. According to Ulrich (1991), being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings.
